Eat your broccoli and broccoli sprouts!

That's the advice from UCLA researchers who have
found that a chemical in broccoli and other
cruciferous vegetables may hold a key to restoring
the body's alklaine design, which declines as we age.

Published in this week's online edition of the
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the
study findings show that sulforaphane, a chemical
in broccoli, switches on a set of antioxidant/antiacid
genes and alkaline buffers in specific immune cells,
which then combat the injurious effects of molecules
known as dietary and metabolic acids that can damage
cells and lead to dis-ease.

Acids from diet and metabolism are byproducts of
normal body processes, such as the metabolic
conversion of food into electrical energy, and
can also enter the body through small particles
present in polluted air. Oxidative or acid damage
to body tissues and organs is the cause of aging
and dis-ease.

"The mysteries of aging have always intrigued man,"
said Dr. Andre Nel, the study's principal investigator
and chief of nanomedicine at the David Geffen School
of Medicine at UCLA.

According to the UCLA study, the ability of aged
tissues to reinvigorate their antioxidant/antiacid
defense can play an important role in reversing
much of the negative impact of dietary and metabolic
acids on the immune system. However, until this
current study, the extent to which antioxidant
defense can impact the aging process in the alklaine
buffering system was not properly understood.

The UCLA team not only found that the direct
administration of sulforaphane in broccoli reversed
the decline in cellular immune function in old mice,
but they witnessed similar results when they took
individual immune cells from old mice, treated
those cells with the chemical outside the body
and then placed the treated cells back into a
recipient animal.

"We found that treating older mice with sulforaphane
increased the immune response to the level of
younger mice," said Hyon-Jeen Kim, first author
and research scientist at the Geffen School.

To investigate how the chemical in broccoli
increased the immune or alkaline buffering system's
response, the UCLA group confirmed that sulforaphane
interacts with a protein called Nrf2, which serves
as a master regulator of the body's overall
antioxidant/antiacid response and is capable of
switching on hundreds of antioxidant/antiacid compounds
and rejuvenating genes and the alkaline buffering system.

Kim said that although there is a decline in Nrf2
activity with aging, this pathway remains accessible
to chemicals like sulforaphane that are capable of
restoring some of the ravages of aging by boosting
antioxidant/antiacid pathways.

"Dietary antioxidants have been shown to have
important effects on immune function, and with
further study, we may be adding broccoli and
other cruciferous vegetables to that list,"
Nel said.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research

Sweat and Pee Your Way To Health

Couch potatoes who complain they are tired all the
time have an easy solution -- low impact exercise.

Regular, low-intensity workouts such as a leisurely
stroll can boost energy levels by 20 percent and
decrease fatigue by 65 percent, a team at the
University of Georgia found.

"Too often we believe that a quick workout will leave
us worn out, especially when we are already feeling
fatigued," Tim Puetz, who helped conduct the study,
said in a statement.

"However, we have shown that regular exercise can
actually go a long way in increasing feelings of
energy, particularly in sedentary individuals."

Puetz and a team led by Patrick O'Connor at the
University's Exercise Psychology Laboratory studied
36 people who did not exercise regularly and who
said they were always fatigued.

They were divided into three groups. One did 20
minutes of moderately intense exercise on an exercise
bike three times a week for six weeks, the second
did similar workouts but at a much more leisurely
pace and the third did no exercise.

The low impact and moderate impact groups had a 20
percent increase in energy levels over the non-
exercisers, the researchers reported in the journal
Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.

To their surprise, the researchers found the low
impact intensity group reported better reduction
in fatigue than those who worked out harder.

"It could be that moderate impact intensity exercise
is too much for people who are already fatigued and
that might contribute to them not getting as great
an improvement as they would had they done the low
impact intensity exercise," O'Connor said in a
statement.

"A lot of people are overworked and not sleeping
enough," he said. "Exercise is a way for people
to feel more energetic. There's a scientific basis
for it and there are advantages to it compared to
things like caffeine and energy drinks."

Many studies have shown that low impact exercise
can boost energy, especially over time. O'Connor's
team published a report in 2006 showing that exercise
can reduce fatigue in patients with cancer, heart
disease and other medical problems. This study
looked at people whose fatigue did not seem to be
associated with any medical condition

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research

Testing Urine and Saliva pH

We are receiving many questions on how
to best monitor the pH of the saliva and urine.

Here is how to test your own pH..........

The pH Miracle Living Acid/Alkaline Saliva
and Urine Test:

1. First, upon waking test your saliva with
the pHydrion paper. When you get out of bed,
lick and wet the end of a pHydrion test strip with
your saliva. Note the color change and write
down the pH number.

Do this before brushing your teeth, drinking,
smoking, or even thinking of eating any food.
The optimum saliva pH should be 7.2.

2. Next, test your first urine of the morning.
This is urine that has been stored in your bladder
during the night that is ready to be eliminated
when you get up. You need to pee on a strip of
pHydrion paper, note the color change and write
down the pH number.

The first urine should run optimally at 7.2
of greater.

If your first urine pH is lower than 7.2
you are deficient in alkaline buffers and need to
move to a more alkaline diet rich in fresh green
vegetables and fruits. If your first urine pH is higher
than 7.2 your alkaline buffers are sufficient to
neutralize the acidic foods and drinks you ingested
the day before.

To increase urine pH which is a direct indicator
of tissue pH take 3 tsp. of pHour salts in 4 to
6 ounces of purified water.

To balance the pH of the urine you need to
move away from acidic foods and drinks and
begin ingesting liberal amounts of electron rich
green vegetables, low sugar fruits and healthy
polyunsaturated fats. I call this way of eating
and drinking the cows program which stands for
chlorophyll, oil/oxygen, water and salts.

3. Next, test your second morning urine before
eating any food. This number should be the pH
of your second urine after you have eliminated the acid
load from the day before.

The acids should be gone the second time you go to the
bathroom so your urine pH should be ideally 7.2 or higher.
If the pH is lower than 7.2 then you are in a state of latent
tissue acidosis and you are deficient in alkaline buffers
such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and
calcium bicarbonate.

The lower pH is also indicative of a diet high in
protein and an increase in acids from proteins including
nitric, sulfuric, phosphoric and uric acids. Eliminate from
the diet proteins from beef, chicken, turkey, pork and
fish to normalize pH at 7.2 while eating liberal amounts
of green foods and green drinks, healthy
polyunsaturated fats and alkaline mineral salts, like
pHour salts.

4. For breakfast eat an avocado soup, vegetable soup,
the healing soup or drink some fresh almond milk or a
fresh green drink. Wait five minutes and then check
your urine and saliva again. Write these pH numbers
down also. The pH numbers will go up from the first
and second morning urine and saliva if you have
sufficient alkaline reserves to buffer acids. If you do
not then the pH numbers will show very little change
or even go down from the early morning pH numbers.

5. Make sure you check your urine and saliva pH between
meals, i.e., between breakfast and lunch and between
lunch and dinner. The pH should always be between
7.2 to 8.4, right after meals and 7.2 a
couple of hours after meals.

The five tests above show the following:

1. The efficiency of the digestive or alkaline buffering
system to deal with what you ate the night
before, i.e., the first and second AM urine and saliva pH.
These numbers will change from day to day if you are
living an eating acidic. When you begin The
pH Miracle Living Plan and start eating the COWS Plan
you will see the pH of the urine and saliva become more
constant and balanced at a pH of 7.2 or higher.

2. How well you treat yourself in general, i.e., how 'strong'
the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder and
liver are in dealing with excess acidity. This is once again
the AM urine and saliva pH. This number shows the
overall state of your health, the condition of the alkaline
reserve of your body which reflects the diet you have been
eating over the last months and years.

This pH number stays rather constant and will only change
after some work has been done in alkalizing and energizing
the body as outlined in the pH Miracle books. Since
the saliva and urine pH is an indicator of extracellular and
interstitial pH, saliva and urine pH readings should never
be below the pH of the sodium bicarbonate buffer system,
7.2. (See below).

The most accurate readings of saliva and urine pH is
recorded immediately upon awakening--after sleeping
at least five hours and before brushing your teeth.

It is during sleep that the body removes waste and is
in an anabolic state restoring and replenishing the body.
For example, if you have a saliva or urine pH of 5.5
and only 5.6 after eating, you know that you are
deficient in alkaline reserve and your body is devoid
of the minerals necessary to process food properly --
your body cannot adequately respond to the
physiological crisis of handling food or drink that
is acidic.

3. The pH of your saliva and urine after you eat or
drink gives you an indication of your alkaline mineral
reserves and your body's ability to deal with the acid
residues created from the digestion of that food or
drink. It is normal for your pH number to increase
after you eat or drink not stay static or decrease.
This once again indicates your inability to deal with
acid, the deficiency of alkaline reserves and the
buildup of latent tissue acidosis.

Even if you think of a food like an avocado or a
lemon the pH of your saliva should increase by a
whole point or ten times. This simple test indicates
you have sufficient alkaline reserve minerals to pull
into your alimentary canal to begin the alkaline
buffering process.

The ideal urine and saliva pH pattern is 7.2 on
awakening, 7.2 before eating and 7.2 to 8.5
following any alkaline meal or drink.

A simple test can be done at most any time of the
day by eating a few almonds.

This will check the adequacy of the alkaline reserve
of the body. When a healthy person with adequate
alkaline reserves eats a few almonds, the saliva
pH almost immediately goes up to a pH of 8.4.
The more acidic the food that is eaten, the more
rapid the response of the alkaline reserve, and the
higher the saliva pH should be following a meal.

4. The pH of the saliva and urine between meals
should be kept in the basic range, pH 7.2 or higher.
After one eats, the stomach releases its necessary
sodium bicarbonate to help alkalize the food. While
doing this, it makes an equivalent amount of base
or baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, that is picked
up by the blood stream and delivered to the alkaline
glands of the body, the saliva, the pancreas, the
gallbladder, the pylorus glands in the
stomach and the liver. The maximum amount of
base in the blood and therefore in the urine and
saliva occurs one to two hours after you eat.

This rhythm of the acid and base flow of the body
is called by Frederick F. Sander, the Base-floods
and the Base-tides of the Acid-Base household.

This information was first published in 1930, by
Frederick F. Sander, a German scientist, in a book
called, The Acid-Base Household of the Human
Organism and its cooperation with the nail circulation
and the rhythm of the Liver.

In his book he states that the body fluids and
therefore the urine is most acid at 2:00 A.M.
(pH 5.0 to 6.8) in the morning (the base tide)
and most alkaline at 2:00 P.M. (pH 7.0 to 8.5)
in the afternoon (base flood).

'The ideal pH numbers depend on the time of day.
Plotted on a curve it looks like the double hump
of the back of a camel. Two times a day the urine
should be alkaline and that is the top of the humps
and corresponds to 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., the
alkaline tide after meals. During the rest of the
day the pH should be between 6.8 and 7.2. This
is optimal urine. The first urine in the morning
should be more acidic because of the decalcification
that takes place during the night in neutralizing
excess acids.'

If all the acids generated in a day from digestion,
respiration, metabolism, degeneration, emotions, and
toxic environments are not all flushed out during the
night they accumulate, day after day. The results
are the expression of states of imbalance as the
body desperately tries to maintain the alkaline fluid
pH at 7.365. The day to day buildup of acids affects
each of us differently depending on our genetics,
lifestyle and diet.

I have found that acids settle in the weakest parts
of the body and if not eliminated through the
bowels, urinary system, lungs or skin, acids are
then bound to fat and stored on our hips, thighs,
stomach, breasts and brain. Bottom-line acids are
the expression of all symptomologies and the
direct cause of ALL sickness and disease.

Monitoring your saliva and urine pH puts the
responsibility of caring for your health back into
your hands. Measuring the saliva and urine pH
guides your therapy and shows you how living,
eating and drinking determines the quality and
quantity of your life.

You should monitor your saliva and urine each day
for at least 12 weeks or until you establish your
balanced pH at 7.2. Once you have established a
balanced saliva and urine pH at 7.2 or higher you
can reduce the number of tests to once a day or
2 to 3 times a week.

Vaccines - A Clear and Present Danger

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
the federal agency that oversees the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recently
conceded the first vaccine-autism case.

This case was filed in the no-fault National Vaccine
Injury Compensation Program as part of the Autism
Omnibus proceedings in the U.S. Federal Court of Claims.

It was one of the first three cases chosen that
alleged Thimerosal in childhood vaccines
significantly contributed to a child developing
autism.

Clifford Shoemaker, of Shoemaker and Associates of
Vienna, Virginia, is the attorney of record in the
Hanna Poling v. Secretary of HHS (case: 02-1466V).

Experts filing on behalf of the petitioner, Hanna
Poling, included pediatric neurologist, Dr. Andrew
Zimmerman of Johns Hopkins University, and Maryland
geneticist and epidemiologist, Dr. Mark Geier of the
Genetic Centers of America.

This concession shows the dishonesty of the continual
media spin coming from public health officials and
others who maintain there is no evidence that
Thimerosal, or any other part of any vaccine, has
ever caused autism or, for that matter, has harmed
anyone in any way.

The facts are that the Vaccine Compensation Act has
already compensated over 2,000 individuals who proved
that they were harmed by vaccines, resulting in
settlements of nearly two billion dollars.

Additionally, hundreds of peer-reviewed
scientific/medical articles from some the
world's best universities have long implicated
Thimerosal in vaccines as a causal factor in
neurodevelopmental disorders including autism.

Furthermore, in 2003, the U.S. House of
Representatives' Government Reform Committee,
after a 3.5-year investigation, concluded that
Thimerosal caused the autism epidemic and that
the FDA and health authorities were guilty of
"institutional malfeasance" in covering it up.

Evidence supporting the connection between mercury
and autism include:

1. Published studies from the US and France
showing that urinary porphyrins, a biomarker
for body-burden of mercury, are elevated in
patients diagnosed with autistic disorders (http://www.mercury-freedrugs.org).

2. A published study by researchers at Harvard
University that found twice as much mercury and
oxidative stress in the brains of those with an
autism diagnosis as found in the brains of those
who were normal.

3. A study from the US showing a significant
relationship between increasing blood mercury
levels and an increased risk of a diagnosis of
an autistic disorder.

4. Numerous papers by independent researchers
showing a link between increasing mercury exposure
from childhood vaccines and the risk of a child
developing an autistic disorder.

5. Several papers showing that adding low levels
of Thimerosal to certain blood, brain, eye, immune,
liver and/or muscle cells poisons their cellular
mitochondrial pathways and can induce cell death.

Today, despite being banned in Europe and restricted
in 7 U.S. states, Thimerosal-containing flu vaccines
are still recommended for routine administration to
pregnant women and infants, with little or no warning
of the presence of this known poison in these and
other vaccines.

An immediate ban and recall of vaccines and other
drugs containing mercury, formaldehyde, alcohol,
formic acid, Hydrochloric acid and other nuerotoxic
compounds used in their production must be instituted
immediately to stop the epidemic of developmental
disorders, including autism, caused by the unsound
use of acidic toxic chemicals in medicine.

Magnesium May Prevent Gallstones

A diet rich in magnesium appears to reduce the
risk developing painful gallstones, according to
findings from a US study.

Consumption of magnesium has been declining over
the years, due in part to the overprocessing of
foods, Dr. Chung-Jyi Tsai and associates note in
their report in the American Journal of
Gastroenterology.

Magnesium deficiency is known to raise triglyceride
levels and decrease HDL ("good") cholesterol levels
in the blood, both of which may increase the risk
of developing gallstones. Still, the long-term
effect of magnesium on the risk of gallstones in
humans was not known until now.

To investigate, Tsai, from the University of
Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, and
colleagues analyzed data from 42,705 men,
between 40 and 75 years of age, who were enrolled
in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.
The men were followed from 1986 to 2002.

The subjects were surveyed every 2 years to
assess the occurrence of new illnesses,
including gallbladder disease. Magnesium
consumption was determined with a semiquantitative
food frequency questionnaire sent to the participants
every 4 years.

During follow-up, 2195 men were diagnosed with
gallstone disease, the researchers found.

Compared with the lowest level of total magnesium
intake, the highest intake reduced the risk of
gallstone disease by 33 percent. The same risk
reduction was seen when considering just dietary
magnesium, when supplements were excluded.

"From many studies by this group and others,
it appears that a generally healthy dietary
pattern, with more plant-based foods, fiber,
and increasing complex carbohydrates, and
now increasing magnesium intake will decrease
the risk of symptomatic gallstones," Dr. Cynthia
W. Ko, from the University of Washington in
Seattle, writes in an accompanying editorial.
"This 'healthy' dietary pattern will also help
in prevention of other chronic diseases in
addition to gallstones."

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research

magnesium in the form of carbonate we decrease
the acids that can form gallstones."

Broccoli Sprouts May Protect Against a Cancerous Bladder

A concentration of broccoli sprouts reduced the
development of bladder tumors in an animal model
by more than half, according to a report in the
March 1 issue of Cancer Research, a journal of
the American Association for Cancer Research.

This finding reinforces human epidemiologic studies
that have suggested that eating cruciferous vegetables
like broccoli is associated with reduced risk for
bladder cancer, according to the studies senior
investigator, Yuesheng Zhang, MD, PhD, professor
of oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
“Although this is an animal study, it provides
potent evidence that eating vegetables is beneficial
in bladder cancer prevention,” he said.

There is strong evidence that the protective action
of cruciferous vegetables derives at least in part
from isothyiocyanates (ITCs), a group of phytochemicals
with well-known cancer preventive activities.

“The bladder is particularly responsive to this group
of natural chemicals,” Zhang said. “In our experiments,
the broccoli sprout ITCs after oral administration
were selectively delivered to the bladder tissues
through urinary excretion.”

Other cruciferous vegetables with ITCs include mature
broccoli, cabbage, kale, collard greens and others all
contained in Dr. Young's newest whole food product called

Broccoli sprouts have approximately 30 times more ITCs
than mature broccoli, and the sprout extract used by
the researchers contains approximately 600 times as
much.

Although animals that had the most protection against
development of bladder cancer were given high doses
of the extract, Zhang said humans at increased risk
for this cancer likely do not need to eat huge amounts
of broccoli sprouts in order to derive protective
benefits.

“Epidemiologic studies have shown that dietary ITCs
and cruciferous vegetable intake are inversely
associated with bladder cancer risk in humans. It
is possible that ITC doses much lower than those
given to the rats in this study may be adequate
for bladder cancer prevention,” he said.

Zhang and his colleagues tested the ability of
the concentrate to prevent bladder tumors in
five groups of rats. The first group acted as a
control, while the second group was given only
the broccoli extract to test for safety. The
remaining three groups were given a chemical, N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN)
in drinking water, which induces bladder cancer.
Two of these groups were given the broccoli
extract in diet, beginning two weeks before
the carcinogenic chemical was delivered.

In the control group and the group given only
the extract, no tumors developed, and there was
no toxicity from the extract in the rats.

About 96 percent of animals given only BBN
developed an average of almost two tumors each
of varying sizes. By comparison, about 74 percent
of animals given a low dose of the extract
developed cancer, and the number of tumors per
rat was 1.39. The group given the high dose of
extract had even fewer tumors. About 38 percent
of this high-dose group developed cancer, and the
average number of tumors per animal was only .46
and, unlike the other animals, the majority were
very small in size.

Government Concedes Vaccine - Autism Case in
Federal Court - Now What?

After years of insisting there is no evidence
to link vaccines with the onset of autism
spectrum disorder (ASD), the US government
has quietly conceded a vaccine-autism case
in the Court of Federal Claims.

The unprecedented concession was filed on
November 9, and sealed to protect the
plaintiff's identify. It was obtained
through individuals unrelated to the case.

The claim, one of 4,900 autism cases currently
pending in Federal "Vaccine Court," was conceded
by US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler
and other Justice Department officials, on behalf
of the Department of Health and Human Services,
the "defendant" in all Vaccine Court cases.

The child's claim against the government --
that mercury-containing vaccines were the cause
of her autism -- was supposed to be one of
three "test cases" for the thimerosal-autism
theory currently under consideration by a
three-member panel of Special Masters, the
presiding justices in Federal Claims Court.

Keisler wrote that medical personnel at the
HHS Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation
(DVIC) had reviewed the case and "concluded
that compensation is appropriate."

The doctors conceded that the child was
healthy and developing normally until her
18-month well-baby visit, when she received
vaccinations against nine different diseases
all at once (two contained thimerosal).

Days later, the girl began spiraling downward
into a cascade of illnesses and setbacks that,
within months, presented as symptoms of autism,
including: No response to verbal direction;
loss of language skills; no eye contact; loss
of "relatedness;" insomnia; incessant screaming;
arching; and "watching the florescent lights
repeatedly during examination."

Seven months after vaccination, the patient
was diagnosed by Dr. Andrew Zimmerman, a
leading neurologist at the Kennedy Krieger
Children's Hospital Neurology Clinic, with
"regressive encephalopathy (brain disease)
with features consistent with autistic
spectrum disorder, following normal development."
The girl also met the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) official
criteria for autism.

In its written concession, the government said
the child had a pre-existing mitochondrial
disorder that was "aggravated" by her shots,
and which ultimately resulted in an ASD diagnosis.

"The vaccinations received on July 19, 2000,
significantly aggravated an underlying
mitochondrial disorder," the concession says,
"which predisposed her to deficits in cellular
energy metabolism, and manifested as a regressive
encephalopathy with features of ASD."
