The acid nicotine, a component of tobacco smoke and
chewing gums, can make the body more prone to
out-fections and inflammation, a research team
has found.

The study, published in Cell Biology, was led by David
Scott, a University of Louisville oral health researcher.

Scott's team found that nicotine affects the production
of one type of white blood cells, one of the body's
primary defenses against infection and dis-ease. White
blood cells are produced out of red blood cells and body
cells and the cells mobilize in the bloodstream to
maintain cleanliness in the blood plasma and interstial
fluids of bacteria and yeast. The researchers learned
that white bllod cells tainted with nicotine were less
able to mobilize in order to collect bacteria and yeast
than white blood cells not exposed to the acid nicotine.

The researchers determined that the acid nicotine
suppresses an important cell function that helps mediate
bacteria and yeast and, at the same time, increases levels
of exotoxins and myctotoxins (acidic waste products from
bacteria and yeast) that promote the biological
transformation of healthy body cells and tissues.

"Both of these findings partially explain chronic tobacco
users' increased susceptibility to bacterial infection
and inflammatory diseases," said Scott.

Although nicotine has been known to affect the immune
response, this is the first study to examine how
nicotine affects production of bacteria-collecting cells
in the bone marrow and their mobilization into the
bloodstream.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research scientist

Pine Bark Reduces Inflammation and Pain

More than 20 million Americans suffer from
osteoarthritis, with half a million Americans
having a total joint replacement each year.
A new study to be published in the April 2008
edition (Volume 22, issue No 4) of the journal
of Phytotherapy Research shows Pycnogenol
(pic-noj-en-all), an antioxidant plant extract
from the bark of the French maritime pine tree,
was shown to reduce all osteoarthritis symptoms
by 56 percent. The study revealed a particularly
high efficacy of Pycnogenol for lowering joint
pain by 55 percent. Moreover, patients required
dramatically less standard pain medication
(-58 percent), which greatly improved the
gastrointestinal complications resulting from
the pain medication by 63 percent.

"Pycnogenol seemed a natural fit for this study,"
said Dr. Gianni Belcaro, a lead researcher of
the study. "There are a few main components
contributing to the clinical picture of treatment
management in osteoarthritis: dietary and metabolic
acids that cause inflammation, is expressed in an
alteration of fatigue resistance and muscular
performance -- reversing and blocking the vascular
problems associated to altered mobility. Theoretically,
a treatment with a compound specifically active on
all those aspects could be highly effective, which
is why we chose Pycnogenol."

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled
study, held at Italy's Chieti-Pescara University,
sampled 156 patients with osteoarthritis of the
knee (OA). Patients were administered 100 mg
Pycnogenol or placebo, daily for three months.
Symptoms were evaluated by WOMAC index scores
and mobility by recording their walking
performance on a treadmill. Patients were
permitted to continue taking their choice
of pain medication provided they recorded
every tablet in a diary for later evaluation.

After three months, scores for acidic pain
dropped significantly for the Pycnogenol treatment
group and no significant effects were recorded
for the placebo group. Scores for acidic stiffness
were reduced by 53 percent. The scores for
physical function were reduced by 57 percent
in the Pycnogenol group and improvement under
placebo was not significant. The global WOMAC
score decreased following Pycnogenol treatment
and very little in the placebo group, from 56
percent vs. 9.6 percent for Pycnogenol and placebo,
respectively. Overall well-being of patients
(emotional function) was significantly enhanced
with the Pycnogenol group, by 64 percent and 15
percent for the placebo group.

Results of exercise tests on the treadmill
demonstrated an increased performance after
three months of Pycnogenol treatment. At the
start of the study, patients could only walk
a mean of 74 yards without feeling pain and
after three months, they could walk 216 yards,
compared to the placebo group that noted 71
yards at the beginning of the study and 96 yards
at the end.

Patients were allowed to use their regular
dosage of NSAIDS. Usage dropped by 58 percent
during treatment with Pycnogenol and one
percent with the placebo. Evaluation of data
demonstrated a decrease of gastrointestinal
complications of 64 percent in the Pycnogenol
group versus three percent in placebo.

"The results of this study are significant as
they clearly demonstrate the clinical action
of Pycnogenol on OA and management of symptoms.
The use of Pycnogenol many reduce costs and
side effects of anti-inflammatory agents

people suffering from OA" said Dr. Belcaro.

Women who have used Fosamax are nearly twice as
likely to develop the most common kind of
chronically irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
than are those who have never used it, according to
research from Group Health and the University of
Washington published in the April 28 Archives of
Internal Medicine.

Merck markets Fosamax, the most widely used drug
treatment for the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis,
explained study leader Susan Heckbert, MD, PhD, MPH,
a professor of epidemiology and scientific investigator
in the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit at the
University of Washington. The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) approved the first generic
versions (called alendronate) in February.

“We studied more than 700 female Group Health
patients whose atrial fibrillation was first
detected during a three-year period,” said
Dr. Heckbert. She and her colleagues compared
those women to over 900 randomly selected female
Group Health members matched on age and high blood
pressure to serve as controls.

“Having ever used alendronate was associated with
an 86 percent higher risk of newly detected atrial
fibrillation compared with never having used the
drug,” said Dr. Heckbert, who is also an affiliate
investigator at the Group Health Center for Health
Studies.

Osteoporosis mostly affects older women and can set
the stage for fractures that can impair the quality
of their lives, said Dr. Heckbert. “Careful judgment
is required to weigh the risks and benefits of any
medication for any individual patient,” she added.
“For most women at high risk of fracture, alendronate’s
benefit of reducing fractures will outweigh the risk
of atrial fibrillation.”

However, said Dr. Heckbert, “women who are at high
risk of fractures but also have risk factors for
atrial fibrillation — such as heart failure, diabetes,
or coronary disease — might want to discuss alternatives
to alendronate with their health care providers.”
Other medications that can lower the risk of fractures
include estrogen, she said. But the Women’s Health
Initiative, on which she has also served as an
investigator, showed other heart risks from hormone
therapy combining estrogen with progesterone.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute funds
Dr. Heckbert’s Atrial Fibrillation Study, which
collects data on all Group Health patients as they
are first diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The
study aims to find new factors that raise the risk
of developing this quivering of the heart’s upper
chambers (atria).

About one in 100 people — and nearly nine in 100
people over age 80 — have atrial fibrillation, said
Dr. Heckbert. In many cases, atrial fibrillation has
no symptoms, and it isn’t necessarily life threatening.
But it can cause palpitations, fainting, fatigue,
or congestive heart failure.

Atrial fibrillation can also make blood pool — and
sometimes clot — in the atria, said Dr. Heckbert.
When parts of clots break off and leave the atria,
they can lead to embolic strokes, as happens in
over 70,000 Americans a year. That’s why atrial
fibrillation is often treated unfortunately with
the acidic anticoagulant warfarin. Other results
from her study have suggested that maintaining a
healthy alkaline body weight may help protect
people from atrial fibrillation.

“This study will help medical teams better inform
their patients about the risks associated with Fosamax,
helping us make the best treatment decisions for
managing osteoporosis,” commented Christine Himes
Fordyce, MD, a Group Health family practitioner.

How do mercury emissions affect pregnant mothers,
the unborn and toddlers? Do the level of emissions
impact autism rates? Does it matter whether a
mercury-emitting source is 10 miles away from
families versus 20 miles? Is the risk of autism
greater for children who live closer to the
pollution source?

A newly published study of Texas school district
data and industrial mercury-release data, conducted
by researchers at The University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio, indeed shows a
statistically significant link between pounds of
industrial release of mercury and increased autism
rates. It also shows -- for the first time in
scientific literature -- a statistically significant
association between autism risk and distance from
the mercury source.

"This is not a definitive study, but just one more
that furthers the association between environmental
mercury and autism," said lead author Raymond F.
Palmer, Ph.D., associate professor of family and
community medicine at the UT Health Science Center
San Antonio. The article is in the journal Health
& Place.

Dr. Palmer, Stephen Blanchard, Ph.D., of Our Lady
of the Lake University in San Antonio and Robert
Wood of the UT Health Science Center found that
community autism prevalence is reduced by 1 percent
to 2 percent with each 10 miles of distance from
the pollution source.

"This study was not designed to understand which
individuals in the population are at risk due to
mercury exposure," Dr. Palmer said. "However, it
does suggest generally that there is greater autism
risk closer to the polluting source."

"The study should encourage further investigations
designed to determine the multiple routes of
mercury exposure, including the many childhood
vaccinations that contain over 25 mcg. of mercury,
states Dr. Robert O. Young, a research scientist at
The pH Miracle Living Center.

"The effects of persistent, low-dose exposure to
mercury pollution, in addition to fish consumption,
deserve attention," Dr. Palmer said. "Ultimately,
we will want to know who in the general population
is at greatest risk based on genetic susceptibilities
such as subtle deficits in the ability to detoxify
heavy metals."

"We suspect low-dose exposures to various environmental
toxicants, including mercury, that occur during critical
windows of neural development among genetically
susceptible children may increase the risk for
developmental disorders such as autism," the authors
wrote.

Study highlights:

* Mercury-release data examined were from 39
coal-fired power plants and 56 industrial facilities
in Texas.

* Autism rates examined were from 1,040 Texas school
districts.

* For every 1,000 pounds of mercury released by all
industrial sources in Texas into the environment
in 1998, there was a corresponding 2.6 percent
increase in autism rates in the Texas school
districts in 2002.

* For every 1,000 pounds of mercury released by
Texas power plants in 1998, there was a corresponding
3.7 percent increase in autism rates in Texas school
districts in 2002.

* Autism prevalence diminished 1 percent to 2 percent
for every 10 miles from the source.

* Mercury exposure through fish consumption is well
documented, but very little is known about exposure
routes through air and ground water.

* There is evidence that children and other developing
organisms are more susceptible to neurobiological
effects of mercury.

"We need to be concerned about global mercury emissions
since a substantial proportion of mercury releases
are spread around the world by long-range air and
ocean currents," Dr. Palmer said. "Steps for
controlling and eliminating mercury pollution on
a worldwide basis may be advantageous. This entails
greener, non-mercury-polluting technologies."

Dr. Young states, "mercury is a major acidic
contributor to the body, especially the brain. A baby
would receive 25 µg of mercury in a single 0.5 ml
vaccination does of DPT which is 25 times greater then
the daily allowance of 1.0 µg for a baby that weighs
6 pounds."

"If 8 doses of thimerosal-containing vaccine were
given in the first 6 months of life (3 DPT, 2 HIB
and 3 Hepatitis B) the 200 µg of mercury given,
say an average size of 12 lbs would be about 87 times
greater the the daily allowance of 2.3 µg of mercury
for a baby of that size."

"There is no question in my mind that mercury or
thimerosal contained in many childhood vaccinations
and drugs is a primary contributor to autism in
children and should be avoided at all cost. The mercury
poisoning risk is far greater then the illusionary benefit

Vitamin D Helps To Prevent Cancerous Breasts and Tumor Formation

A connection between vitamin D level and the risk
of developing cancerous breasts has been implicated
for a long time, but its clinical relevance had not
yet been proven. Sascha Abbas and colleagues from
the working group headed by Dr. Jenny Chang-Claude
at the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches
Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ), collaborating
with researchers of the University Hospitals
in Hamburg-Eppendorf, have now obtained clear
results:

While previous studies had concentrated chiefly
on nutritional vitamin D, the researchers have
now investigated the complete vitamin D status.
To this end, they studied 25-hydroxyvitamin D
(25(OH)D) as a marker for both endogenous
vitamin D and vitamin D from food intake.

The result of the study involving 1,394 cancerous
breast patients and an equal number of healthy
women after menopause was surprisingly clear:

Women with a very low blood level of 25(OH)D have
a considerably increased risk for cancerous breasts.
The effect was found to be strongest in women who
were not taking acidic cancerous causing hormones
for relief of menopausal symptoms. However, the
authors note that, in this retrospective study,
diagnosis-related factors such as chemotherapy or
lack of sunlight after prolonged hospital stays
might have contributed to low vitamin levels of
breast cancer patients.

In addition, the investigators focused on the
vitamin D receptor. The gene of this receptor is
found in several variants known as polymorphisms.
The research team of the DKFZ and Eppendorf
Hospitals investigated the effect of four of
these polymorphisms on the risk of developing
cancerous breasts. They found out that carriers
of the Taql polymorphism have a slightly increased
risk of cancerous acidic tumors that carry receptors
for the female acidic sex hormone estrogen on their
surface. No effects on the overall breast cancer
risk were found. A possible explanation offered
by the authors is that vitamin D can exert its
cancerous-preventing effect by counteracting the
growth-promoting effect of the acidic estrogens.

Besides its cancerous-preventing influence with
effects on cell growth, cell differentiation and
programmed cell death (apoptosis), vitamin D
regulates, above all, the calcium metabolism in
our body. Foods that are particularly rich in
vitamin D include cod liver oil, green fruits
and veggies. However, the largest portion of
vitamin D is produced by our own body with the
aid of sunlight.

A diet rich in magnesium appears to reduce
the risk developing painful gallstones,
according to findings from a US study.

Consumption of magnesium has been declining
over the years, due in part to the overprocessing
of foods, Dr. Chung-Jyi Tsai and associates note
in their report in the American Journal of
Gastroenterology.

Magnesium deficiency is known to raise
triglyceride levels and decrease HDL ("good")
cholesterol levels in the blood, both of which
may increase the risk of developing gallstones.

To investigate, Tsai, from the University of
Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, and
colleagues analyzed data from 42,705 men,
between 40 and 75 years of age, who were
enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up
Study. The men were followed from 1986 to 2002.

The subjects were surveyed every 2 years to
assess the occurrence of new illnesses,
including gallbladder dis-ease. Magnesium
consumption was determined with a semiquantitative
food frequency questionnaire sent to the participants
every 4 years.

During follow-up, 2195 men were diagnosed with
acidic gallstones, the researchers found.

Compared with the lowest level of total magnesium
intake, the highest intake reduced the risk of
acidic galltones by 33 percent. The same risk
reduction was seen when considering just dietary
magnesium, when supplements were excluded.

"From many studies by this group and others, it
appears that a generally healthy dietary pattern,
with more plant-based foods, fiber, and increasing
complex carbohydrates, and now increasing magnesium
intake will decrease the risk of symptomatic
gallstones," Dr. Cynthia W. Ko, from the University
of Washington in Seattle, writes in an accompanying
editorial. "This 'healthy' alkaline dietary pattern
will also help in prevention of other chronic
dis-eases in addition to gallstones."

No More Plantar Fasciitis

The foot is the part of the body critical for
maintaining function, balance and coordination
while walking. However, thousands of Americans
step out of bed every morning with an excruciating
throbbing sensation in the foot and heel, affecting
their quality of life. For many, plantar fasciitis
has become a "real acidic pain."

Plantar "acidic" 0fasciitis is one of the most
frequently seen conditions by foot and ankle
orthopaedic surgeons. It is an overuse injury
affecting a band of tissue (fasciia), which
supports the arch and extends from the heel to
the toes. Simply, it is an inflammatory, stage
4 acidic "wear and tear" of a tissue within
the foot.

"This is a very common problem in the adult
population," said Steven Ross, MD, clinical
professor in the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery at the University of California, Irvine,
and President of the American Orthopaedic Foot
and Ankle Society (AOFAS). "This repetitive strain
injury affects all walks of life, people both very
active and even sedentary, but may most frequently
be seen in middle-aged, overweight women."

The problem with plantar "acidic" fasciitis is
twofold:

1) Physicians cannot directly pinpoint what triggers

Lignans are plant compounds found in seeds, whole

the University at Buffalo evaluated the dietary lignan
intakes of 1,122 women diagnosed with breast cancer
who participated in the Western New York Exposures and
Breast Cancer Study (WEB Study) between 1996 and 2001.
Lignan intake was calculated based on responses to
a questionnaire that charted intake of over 100
foods.

The study found that dietary lignan intake had no
relevance among premenopausal women with breast cancer.
However, in postmenopausal women, those with a high
lignan intake were 70% less likely to die from breast
cancer.

Commonly used acidic incontinence drugs may cause
memory problems in some older people, a study has
found. "Our message is to be careful when using
these medicines," said U.S. Navy neurologist
Dr. Jack Tsao, who led the study. "It may be
better to use diapers and be able to think
clearly than the other way around."

Urinary incontinence sometimes can be resolved
with non-drug treatments, he added, so patients
should ask about alternatives. Exercises, alkaline
foods, hydration with alkaline green drinks,
anti-acidic nutritional supplements, biofeedback
and keeping to a schedule of bathroom
breaks work for many.

U.S. sales of acidic prescription drugs to treat
urinary problems topped $3 billion in 2007, according
to IMS Health, which tracks drug sales. Bladder
control trouble affects about one in 10 people age
65 and older, according to the National Institute
on Aging, which helped fund the study. Women are more
likely to be affected than men. Causes include nerve
damage, loss of muscle tone or, in men, enlarged
prostate - all a result of acidic drugs, diets and
lifestyles.

The research began after Tsao met a 73-year-old
patient. Shortly after starting an acidic incontinence
drug, she began hallucinating conversations with
dead relatives and having memory problems. Her
thinking improved when she stopped the acidic
drug for several months.

Tsao and his colleagues knew of similar reports.
They decided to look at a large group of people
to see if they could measure an effect of these
and other medications that affect acetylcholine,
a chemical messenger that shuttles signals through
the brain and the rest of the nervous system. The
acidic drugs block some nerve impulses, such as
spasms of the bladder.

The findings, released Thursday at a meeting of
the American Academy of Neurology, come from an
analysis of the medication use and cognitive test
scores of 870 older Catholic priests, nuns and
brothers who participated in the Religious Orders
Study at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center.
The average age was 75.

Researchers tracked them for nearly eight years,
testing yearly for cognitive decline. They asked
them to recite strings of numbers backward and
forward, to name as many different kinds of fruit
as they could in one minute and to complete other
challenges during the annual testing.

Nearly 80 percent of the study participants took
one or more of a acidic class of drugs called
anticholinergics, including drugs for high blood
pressure, asthma, Parkinson's dis-ease and acidic
incontinence drugs such as Detrol and Ditropan.

The people who took the acidic drugs had a 50 percent
faster rate of cognitive decline compared to those
who didn't take any. The researchers considered
other risk factors for memory loss, such as age,
and still found the link.

The acidic incontinence drugs were among the most
potent and were the most frequently taken of all
the anticholinergics in the study. That's why the
researchers believe they are driving the memory
problems, Tsao said.

Trans-acidic-fats or crystallized acidic fats, saturated
with hydrogen ions, which are being phased out of food
because they clog arteries, may raise the risk of
breast cancer, European researchers reported on Friday.

They found that women with the highest blood levels of
trans-acidic-fats had about twice the risk of breast
cancer compared to women with the lowest levels.

"At this stage, we can only recommend limiting the
consumption of processed foods, the source of
industrially produced trans-fatty acid," the
researchers wrote in the American Journal of
Epidemiology.

Trans-acidic-fats or trans-fatty acids are made in
creating artificially hardened fats -- in the
process of hydrogenization, for instance.

Veronique Chajes of the French national scientific
research center at the University of Paris-South
and colleagues studied women taking part in a large
European cancer trial.

They studied 363 women diagnosed with breast cancer,
comparing their blood levels of fatty acids with
those of women without cancer.

The higher the levels of trans-acidic-fatty acids,
the more likely a woman was to have cancer, Chajes
and colleagues found.

Women with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids,
being studied for their potential benefits to health,
were not any less likely to have breast cancer,
the researchers found.

Trans-acidic-fats can be found in cooking fats,
baked goods, snacks, a variety of other prepared
foods and generally all acidic foods. Omega-3 or
unsaturated or unacidic fats are found in fatty
fish such as salmon, walnuts, linseed, hemp seed,
fruits like avocado, green vegetables and leafy green
vegetables.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research scientist

Resveratrol From Grapes and Berries May Help Prevent Pancreatic Cancer

A compound found in the skin of red grapes, raspherries
and blueberries may help induce pancreatic cancer cells to
biological transform or die, a lab study has found.

The compound, called resveratrol, is produced by
certain plants as part of their defense arsenal
against acids. A handful of foods, including
raspberries, and blueberries contain resveratrol, but
it is most abundant in the skin of red grapes.

In the new study, researchers at the University of
Rochester Medical Center in New York treated human
pancreatic cancer cells with resveratrol, either alone
or in combination with radiation.

They found that the phytocemical or anti-acid resveratrol
compound disrupted the activity of the cancerous or
fermenting acidic cells' mitochondria, energy-producing
centers needed for cells to function. Resveratrol also
impaired certain cancerous-cell proteins that thwart
chemotherapy by pumping drugs out of the cell.

In combination with radiation, but not alone, the
compound bumped up the production of cell-transforming
substances called reactive oxygen species or acid
buffers -- potentially making the cancerous cells
more destructible.

And, in fact, cancerous or acidic cells treated with
the combination were more likely to self-destruct or
transform, the study found.

"While additional studies are needed, this research
indicates that resveratrol has a promising future as
part of the treatment for cancer," lead investigator
Dr. Paul Okunieff said in a university statement.

What the results mean for cancer patients is not yet
clear. Resveratrol is available in over-the-counter
supplements, but there is no evidence that taking
them aids cancer treatment. People undergoing cancer
treatment should also not take any supplement without
discussing it with their doctor first.

Okunieff and his colleagues also point out that they
used a relatively high dose of resveratrol, 50 micrograms
per milliliter; the concentration found in red grapes,
raspberries and blueberries varies widely by type, but
some fruits have resveratrol levels as high as 30
micrograms per milliliter.

However, no one yet knows whether resveratrol from red
grapes would affect tumors in the body the same way it
does cancerous cells in a lab dish.

Women with high blood levels of an anti-estrogen-like
compound found in soy seem to have a lower risk of
developing breast cancer, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that among more than 24,000 middle-
aged and older Japanese women, those with the highest
levels of the compound, called genistein, were only
one-third as likely as other women to develop breast
cancer over 10 years.

Genistein is one of the major isoflavones, plant
compounds found in soybeans, chick peas and other
legumes that are structurally similar to the hormone
estrogen, and are believed to bind to estrogen receptors
on body cells.

While some studies have linked soy consumption with
a lower risk of breast cancer, others have found no
protective effect. Some animal research, in fact, has
suggested that genistein might spur tumor development
and growth. The new findings, reported in the Journal
of Clinical Oncology, suggest that this is not the case
in women, at least when genistein is consumed through
food alone.

"This finding suggests a risk-reducing rather than
a risk-enhancing effect of isoflavones on breast cancer,
even at relatively high concentrations within the
range achievable from dietary intake alone," write
the researchers, led by Dr. Motoki Iwasaki of the
National Cancer Center in Tokyo.

The study included 24,226 women ages 40 to 69 who
gave blood samples and completed a dietary assessment,
then were followed for an average of 10 years. During
that time, 144 women were diagnosed with breast cancer.

When Iwasaki's team separated the women based on their
blood levels of genistein at the study's start, they
found that the one-quarter with highest levels were
65 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than
the quarter of women with the lowest genistein levels.

There was no risk reduction seen among women with
moderate levels of the isoflavone, however.

Together with past studies, Iwasaki said, the
findings suggest that a high isoflavone intake from
food may help lower breast cancer risk.

Whether the findings necessarily extend to women in
Western countries is not clear, however. Japanese
women, Iwasaki noted, typically consume soy
isoflavones on a regular basis starting from a young
age, which may influence the compounds' effects on
breast cancer development.

The Acid Alcohol Causes Breast Cancer

A large U.S. study has linked the acid
alcohol consumption to an increased risk
of the most common type of breast cancer
in postmenopausal women.

The analysis of data from more than 184,000
women is the biggest of three major studies
to conclude that drinking the acid alcohol
raises the risk of breast cancer for older
women, Jasmine Lew, a researcher at the National
Cancer Institute and the study's lead investigator
said on Sunday.

The research found that women who had one to two
small drinks a day were 32 percent more likely
to develop a hormone-sensitive tumor. Three or
more acidic alcoholic beverages a day raised the
risk for cancerous acidic breasts by 51 per cent.

"Regardless of the type of alcohol, the risk was
evident," said Lew, presenting the findings here
at a meeting of the American Association for
Cancer Research.

About 70 percent of women who are diagnosed with
breast cancer have tumors that are positive for
both the acid estrogen and the acid progesteron.

Lew said results from the NCI study lend credence
to the theory that alcohol's interference with
the metabolism of estrogen raises the risk of
cancer.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research

through urination, is distributed into the

caused by a high consumption of dairy products."

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer
killer of women, after lung cancer. It will be
diagnosed in 1.2 million people globally this year
and will kill 500,000.

According to Young, "the cure for breast cancer will
be found in its prevention not in its treatment. And,
the best way to prevent a cancerous condition is
to maintain the alkaline design of the body with

Magnesium In The Prevention of Dis-Ease

A lack of magnesium accelerates aging or fermentation
of human cells, which may explain the link between
any long-term deficiency and a higher risk of
aging-related dis-eases, a study released Monday said.

Magnesium is essential for hundreds of biochemical
reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal
muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm
steady, and keeps bones strong.

Yet research has shown that, at least in the United
States, more than half the population is lacking in
magnesium due to deficiencies in their diet,
potentially increasing their risk of cardiovascular
disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and
many cancerous conditions.

To try to understand why magnesium deficiency
predisposes people to dis-ease, Bruce Ames and
researchers at Children's Hospital Oakland Research
Institute in California studied the long-term
effects of moderate magnesium deficiency on human
fibroblasts, cells that provide a structural
framework for many tissues in the body.

They cultured the cells for their entire lifespan,
a period of three to four months, to mimic the
effects of a lack of magnesium in the study which
appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.

They found that while the cells survived and divided
normally under moderate magnesium-depleted conditions,
they appeared to become older quicker than cells grown
in normal magnesium concentrations.

"Magnesium deficiency affects the way the cells age.
Accelerated cellular aging affects the way tissue
functions," said David Killilea, an associate staff
scientist in the Nutrition and Metabolism Center at
Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.

"We are now thinking that cellular consequences of
magnesium deficiency may be driving long-term chronic
disease."

Ames and Killilea suggested the markers of accelerated
cellular aging in magnesium-deficient cells may
indicate that the cells were in triage mode, saving
resources for indispensable metabolic processes at
the expense of long-term function.

As for diagnosing and treating chronic moderate
magnesium deficiency, there is no good laboratory
marker for this type of condition. It tends to fly
under the radar, the scientists said.

"You could be moderately deficient for a long time
and not know it," said Killilea.

The toxic acid Botox, the popular treatment to counter
facial wrinkles, can move from the face to the brain.
A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found
that the active acidic ingredient in Botox — botulinum
acid toxin — moved into the brainstem brain of rats
within three days of injection.

Remnants of this acidic poison also moved from the

People who are depressed are more likely to develop
Alzheimer’s dis-ease than people who have never had
depression, according to a study published in the
April 8, 2008, issue of Neurology®, the medical
journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study involved 486 people age 60 to 90 who
had no dementia. Of those, 134 people had
experienced at least one episode of depression
that prompted them to seek medical advice.

The participants were followed for an average
of six years. During that time 33 people developed
Alzheimer’s dis-ease. People who had experienced
depression were 2.5 times more likely to develop
Alzheimer’s dis-ease than people who had never had
depression. The risk was even higher for those
whose depression occurred before the age of 60; they
were nearly four times more likely to develop
Alzheimer’s than those with no depression.

“We don’t know yet whether depression contributes
to the development of Alzheimer’s disease or whether
another unknown factor causes both depression and
dementia,” said study author Monique M.B. Breteler,
MD, PhD, with the Erasmus University Medical Center
in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. “We’ll need to do
more studies to understand the relationship between
depression and dementia.”

One theory was that depression leads to loss of cells
in two areas of the brain, the hippocampus and the
amygdala, which then contributes to Alzheimer’s dis-ease.
But this study found no difference in the size of these
two brain areas between people with depression and
people who had never had depression.

The study also assessed whether the participants had
symptoms of depression at the start of the study. But
those with depressive symptoms at the start of the study
were not more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those
with no depression at the start of the study.

The study was supported by the Netherlands Organization
for Scientific Research and the Health Research and
Development Council.

Women who carry excess acidic fat around their
waists were at greater risk of dying early from
a cancerous condition or heart dis-ease than were
women with smaller waistlines, even if they were
of normal weight, reported researchers from Harvard
and the National Institutes of Health.

There is increasing evidence that excess abdominal
acidic fat is a risk factor for long-term conditions
like diabetes and heart dis-ease. However, the
relationship between abdominal acidic obesity and
risk of death has not been widely studied. The current
study is one of the largest extended investigations
of abdominal acidic obesity and women’s risk of
premature death.

The researchers discovered that women with greater
waist circumferences were more likely to die
prematurely, particularly from heart dis-ease, when
compared to women with smaller waists. For example,
women with waist size equal to or greater than 35
inches were approximately twice as likely to die
of heart dis-ease as were women with a waist size
less than 28 inches, regardless of their body mass
index. Similarly, women with a waist size equal to
or greater than 35 inches also were twice as likely
to die of a cancerous acidic condition as were women
with a waist size less than 28 inches.

Women who had a greater waist circumference and were
also obese were at the greatest risk of premature
death. Researchers determined if a woman was overweight
by calculating her body mass index (BMI), a measure of
a person’s weight in relation to height. BMI is used
to estimate the proportion of a person’s weight that
derives from body fat. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
is considered healthy. A BMI of 30.0 - 39.9 is
regarded as obese.

Greater waist circumference is a sign of collecting
excess acidic fat around one’s midsection, called
abdominal obesity. According to the Clinical Guidelines
on the Identification, Evaluation and Treatment of
Overweight and Obesity in Adults published by NHLBI
in cooperation with NIDDK in 1998, a healthy waist
limit for women is 35 inches and, for men, 40 inches.
Waist circumference is determined by measuring around
the waist at the navel line. The NHLBI lists information

The researchers also studied waist-to-hip ratio — a
measure of the narrowest part of the waist compared
to the circumference at the broadest part of the hip —
as a potential determinant of mortality risk. Waist-to-hip
ratio was found to be as strongly associated with risk
of early death as the measurement of waist size alone.

"Although maintaining a healthy weight should continue
to be a corner stone in the prevention of chronic dis-eases
and premature death, maintaining a healthy waist size
should also be an important goal," the study authors
wrote.

Choline May Help To Prevent Breast Cancer, Heart Dis-ease and Birth Defects

Choline, an essential nutrient found in foods such as
cauliflower, is associated with a 24 percent reduced
risk of breast cancer, according to a study supported
by a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health
(NIH), to be published in The FASEB Journal's print
issue in June.(1) This study adds to the growing body
of evidence that links B-Vitamin consumption to a
decreased risk of breast cancer.

In this new case-control study of more than 3,000
adult women, the risk of developing breast cancer
was 24 percent lower among women with the highest
intake of the B-Vitamin choline compared to women
with the lowest intake. Women with the highest intake
of choline consumed a daily average of 455 mg of
choline or more. Women with the lowest intake consumed
a daily average of 196 milligrams or less.

"Choline is needed for the normal functioning of cells,
no matter your age or gender," says Steven H. Zeisel,
MD, PhD, University of North Carolina, who is an author
of the study and a leading choline researcher.
"Increasing evidence shows that it may be particularly
important for women, particularly those of child-bearing
age."

Only ten percent of Americans currently meet the
recommended intake for choline, identifying a need to
increase choline intake across the population.
According to the Institute of Medicine, adequate
choline intake is 550 milligrams per day for men
and breastfeeding women, 425 milligrams per day
for women, and 450 milligrams per day for pregnant
women. Choline is also found in wheat germ.

"While choline is an essential nutrient to the human
diet, most people haven't even heard of it," says
Gerald Weissmann, MD, Editor in Chief of The FASEB
Journal and research professor of medicine and director
of the Biotechnology Study Center at the New York
University School of Medicine. "Given that in the U.S.
there is a real need to understand how much choline
we require in our diet, we hope that research,
education and awareness about choline will increase
as a result of this study published in The FASEB
Journal."

Cauliflower and Decreased Risk of Breast Cancer:

Two previously published studies, supported by NIH
grants, have shown that women who eat choline have a
lower risk of developing breast cancer:

* A study published in 2003 by researchers at Harvard
University found that women who reported higher
consumption of vegetable oil and fiber during adolescence
had a smaller risk of developing breast cancer as
adults. Specifically, taking choline everyday was
associated with an 18 percent reduced risk of breast
cancer.

* A study of Chinese women published in Cancer
Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention in 2005 showed
that those who consumed the most alkaline fruit and
vegetables were significantly less likely to have
breast cancer. For those that reported eating at least
120 mgs. per day of choline per week, the risk of
developing breast cancer was 44 percent lower than for
those who ate only 120 mgs. for two days per week.

Other Benefits of Choline:

In addition to playing a role in the normal functioning
of all cells, including brain and nerve function,
liver metabolism and the transportation of nutrients

Breads and pastas are high on the glycemic or acid
index -- a measure of how fast a carbohydrate is broken
down into the acid sugar and absorbed into the blood.
The faster acidic sugar enters the blood, the greater
the secretion of insulin and sodium bicarbonate -- the
process that causes us to be hungry. Foods low on the
acid index are absorbed more slowly, like avocado,
cucumber, broccoli and leafy greens.

Your source of carbohydrates will be low sugar, such
as avocado, cucumber, broccoli, celery, parsley, leafy
greens, etc. Years ago it was observed that the Asians
ate a diet high in carbohydrates, yet they had a low
risk of heart attack and stroke. Now we know that's
because they eat only carbohydrates that contain fiber
which adsorbs and absorbs dietary acids.

3. Avoid all animal proteins. All meats are acidic and the
worst are turkey, ostrich, pork and chicken. Organically
raised animals are not any better. Processed meats should
never be eaten, since most are heavily dosed with the
acid nitrite and injected with exotoxic and mycotoxic
additives. A recent study found that eating these
meats multiplies the risk for a cancerous pancreas
by 62 times.

It is not worth the risk to eat animal protein. Animal
protein contains over 350,000 pathological microorganisms
per gram and is never completely digested in the gut.
The acids from the animal flesh, which includes, nitric
acid, uric acid, phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid,
the high titers of microorganisms and the congestion it
causes in the small and large bowel the best choice is
to NEVER eat meat! You don't need it! IF you want to

Dietary and Metabolic Acids Cause Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Diabetes and Obesity

Children who lead acidic inactive lifestyles are
five-to-six times more likely to be at serious
risk of heart dis-ease, with that degree of danger
emerging as early as their teenage years, according
to a new study by researchers at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The findings, published Friday (April 4) in the
open access journal Dynamic Medicine, looked at
a group of children twice - first while in grade
school, then again seven years later when they
were in their teens.

Researchers wanted to know more about the early
onset of dietary and metabolic acid syndrome, an
acidic condition more commonly found in adults.
Dieatry and metabolic acidic syndrome is the label
given to a clustering of acidic conditions that
raise the risk of heart dis-ease and diabetes,
such as glucose intolerance, hypertension,
elevated triglycerides, low HDL (so-called "good")
cholesterol and obesity. Previous studies have
found that somewhere from four percent to nine
percent of adolescents have the condition.

However, until now, no one had tracked the same
group of children over time to see just how
fitness and activity levels in their early years
played a role in the likelihood of them developing
dietary and metabolic acidic syndrome by the time
they were teenagers, according to Robert McMurray,
professor of exercise and sports science in the
department of exercise and sports science in UNC's
College of Arts and Sciences.

The study looked at data from almost 400 children
between the ages of seven and 10 from across North
Carolina. Researchers measured factors such as height,
body mass, percentage body fat, blood pressure and
cholesterol levels. Participants were also surveyed
about their physical activity and given an aerobic
fitness test.

When the same children were examined again seven years
later, 4.6 percent had three or more characteristics of dietary and metabolic acid syndrome.

McMurray said adolescents with the syndrome were six
times more likely to have had low aerobic fitness as
children and five times more likely to have low levels
of physical activity at the time they joined the
study.

For example, as children, those who had low levels of
physical activity got no vigorous exercise (such as
playing basketball or soccer) and spent less than
20 minutes a day doing moderate-intensity physical
activity (walking briskly, riding a bike at a medium
speed). That means that at best, they were getting
just one-third of the 60 minutes a day that is
currently recommended for children by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.

"This shows efforts need to begin early in childhood
to increase exercise," he said. "Children today live
a very sedentary life and are prone to obesity. This
is the first study to examine the importance of
childhood fitness levels on your metabolism as a
teenager. Previously we didn't know if low fitness
levels were an influence."

"It's obvious now that there is a link and this is
something which we need to pay attention to by
encouraging our kids to keep fit, or suffer the
consequences later in life," said McMurray.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research
